Welcome to the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program

Troy Watson, MD, Program Director, Valley Hospital Medical Center, Las Vegas, NV.A message from Troy Watson, MD, Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Valley Hospital Medical Center Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program. Valley Hospital is a 400-bed hospital located in the heart of Las Vegas and performs approximately 6,000 surgeries annually. Whether you’re just beginning your search or finalizing your rank list, I am confident that our facility provides a wide range of pathology to meet your training requirements.

Our Orthopedic Surgery Program is a five-year continuum of organized and progressive training. Two residents are admitted annually for a total of 10 residents. Our program has received initial accreditation from ACGME and is now working toward full accreditation.

Our program provides one-on-one teaching with a diverse group of fellowship-trained Attendings. This includes rotations in sports, spine, hand, foot and ankle, and total joint reconstruction. Valley Hospital provides a large volume of sports and spine pathology with these cases being performed daily. In addition, we provide six months of orthopedic pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Orange County as well as six months of trauma at University Medical Center, the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Nevada.

Our residents routinely score very high on the Orthopedic In-Training Exam as we provide four hours of uninterrupted education time per week with faculty in attendance. There are also monthly cadaver and skills labs for residents to hone their surgical dexterity. We value hands-on learning with early operative experience. In addition, we place an emphasis on clinical outcomes research and encourage our residents to participate in projects throughout their years in training.

I believe our program provides the optimal training to produce exceptional orthopedic surgeons. This program prepares residents for an eventual career in community orthopedics with an academic interest.
