Welcome to the Neurology Residency Program

Paul H. Janda, DOA message from Dr. Paul H. Janda, DO, JD, FAAN, Program Director

Welcome to the Valley Hospital Medical Center (VHMC) Neurology Residency Program. This is a very strong neurology residency training program that is designed to best prepare you for your career in neurology. Our neurology residency program is a four-year training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

We are purposely a small program from a resident standpoint. However, we boast a very large faculty-to-resident ratio. We accept two residents per year for a total of eight neurology residents. It is a combined intern year and neurology residency training program such that our residents do not have to move more than once in their training.

Valley Hospital Medical Center will undoubtedly provide you with extensive academic and clinical experience. The training program is based at Valley Hospital Medical Center’s Comprehensive Stroke Center. The residents are able to treat a diverse patient population comprised of a vast amount of pathology. Comprehensive Stroke Centers are the highest designation for stroke centers as they have the best outcomes for ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke.

Valley Hospital Medical Center is the only Comprehensive Stroke Center associated with a neurology residency in the State of Nevada. The inpatient teaching hospital is situated in a hub-and-spoke model whereby numerous patients are transported to our teaching facility from other nearby hospitals to receive a higher level of care. The resident physicians are able to guide the neurologic care of these patients and learn from their wide array of diagnoses.

The neurology resident outpatient clinic is located within walking distance of VHMC to prevent unnecessary driving. The clinic is staffed with well-trained personnel and advanced diagnostic instruments and equipment. There are numerous teaching faculty in a variety of neurology subspecialties in the resident outpatient continuity clinic. The patients provide a wide array of neurologic diagnoses for the resident physicians to learn from. Additionally, the resident physicians are involved in the treatment and management of patients in the numerous clinical trials in the outpatient setting as well. The outpatient clinical experience is also comprised of numerous neurology subspecialty rotations at the Cleveland Clinic campus here locally. That location is within one mile of our institution.

The primary goals of the neurology residency program are to ensure that the residents are able to:

  • Train in an environment with an exceptionally positive culture
  • Graduate as well-rounded and clinically competent neurologists
  • Obtain a fellowship if they desire to
  • Become board-certified upon graduation

All the neurology teaching faculty have an unwavering commitment to these goals. Along these lines, the program boasts a 100 percent board pass rate and a 100 percent fellowship acceptance rate.

As the Neurology Residency Program Director, my commitment to teaching and resident happiness is glaringly evident. All the other neurology faculty also share the same sentiment and focus as it is our cohesive aim to render an excellent training experience. Resident well-being is strongly emphasized at our institution and resident happiness is evident at our program. Among the presence of a positive learning environment, there are numerous resident wellness events throughout the year.

We look forward to building your neurological clinical skills as you embark upon becoming a well-rounded and board-certified neurologist. Upon graduation from the Neurology Residency Program at VHMC, you will undoubtedly be prepared for the practice of neurology in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Also, when you reflect upon your residency training, you will be happy to know that you trained in a program that has a warm culture as well.

We look forward to being a part of the bright future ahead of you.
